In March 2023, Dancing Monkey Laboratories presented an innovative hybrid live performance and live stream event with multiple cameras – creating two unique viewing experiences.
SUBLIMITY – a love supreme is a one-act interdisciplinary show for 3 actors and 3 dancers. It is about challenging systems and challenging traditional theatre forms and expectations. The play takes place in an imagined reality, where citizens are separated into two classes. This world is tightly controlled, and the citizens no longer question how things are and simply accept that this is how it is. The society is guided by 34 ‘Citizen Laws’ that were written in a time no one remembers. Then, something shifts. Citizen Law #34 – Projection leads to judgement, which leads to assumption, which leads to a completely manufactured reality. There is only one reality, and that is the one we program.

This production would not have happened without the funding support of the Canada Council for the Arts. This production also would not have happened without the contributions and support of many others over the years – artists, audiences, volunteers, collaborators, and donors. In particular we would like to express gratitude to Matt McKinney for contributing to the technology for the livestream, and Michelle Brandenburg for donating health and safety equipment. This production was rehearsed at The Room YYC, the Calgary Bridge Centre, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Evergreen Theatre, and the ATCO Performing Arts Centre. Finally, we could not have done this show without the support of cSpace’s staff and technical team
